1450. That is my guess on how many texts over the last 10
years that I’ve received from Calley saying “my life is a Lifetime movie”
For those of us who weren’t Math majors (and let’s face it,
I was a Communications major ((what does that even mean?!)) and Calley was an
Art major ((so…… you’re an artist? Oil Pastels? No one really knows )) that is roughly
145 texts per year asserting that her life was more dramatic than a Lifetime
movie. That’s a little less than once a week.
When we got this idea to start a blog with cooking (her
passion) and writing (pretty much the only talent I have after that failed
Ukulele stint) we realized that surely, everyone else was going through the
same thing, right? Why not incorporate some amazing recipes for the average
woman who is going through the same bag of shit like we are? We may not have it
all down, but at least we will be eating well. Calley is an amazing cook.
Doesn’t say much coming from me because I eat like a 12 year old (think corn
dogs, mac and cheese and occasionally some feta sprinkled on a salad somewhere). But seriously, she is a great cook.
No one ever said that it was going to be easy and damn they
were right. Calley cried to her mom at age 23 when all of our friends were
married and she was single. I cried to my mom at age 29 when all of our friends
were really married and then were pregnant, and I was divorced.
For almost 2 years. Funny story about that later.
And it’s not just love that sucks either! It’s the jobs, friends, deaths, anxiety,
weight gain, family problems. It’s all there. No one ever tells you that at one
moment you can be on top of your game,
and then it all comes to a halt. Or what
feels like a halt. And then you have to pick your happy ass up and give it a go
again. That’s life.
It is our sincere hope that when you are down and out and about
to open that bag of nacho cheese chips (God love them) that you read our blog.
Girl, we’ve been there. Get that sweet potato in the boiling water and read
this blog. You can do it. No, seriously—put water in the pot and then peel that
potato.
Even if you are “back in the high life again” (insert Steve
Winwood song here), and you’re getting ready to cook for your boyfriend for the
first time, open this blog and get some great recipe ideas…. And words of
caution-- example and preview: farting in cars while making = NOT OKAY, do not
shit where you eat and always empty your bladder before bed. These and more are
some of the lowlights of our twenties. We know you’ve been there too.
Navigating your 20’s and beyond is a true, true bitch. But
like any good girl scout, with every lesson, every victory, every defeat, you
get a patch- so wear that sash loud and proud. We’re going to make it through
this.
Welcome to She Cooks, She Writes.
Love,
Calley and Kelsey
